Application Requirements

Gustav Mahler Academy 2023/2024

1. Participation is open to particularly well-qualified young musicians born between January 1, 1997 and July 25, 2005, who may come from any country in the world.

2. Students of the violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone and timpani may be admitted to the Gustav Mahler Academy’s advanced music courses for its 2023/2024 biennial edition.

3. The musicians may be divided into groups with different dates of arrival.

4. Participants may not have a permanent (open-ended) employment in a professional orchestra or as a teacher.

5. Registration requests must be made electronically by logging onto our website under Application form.

6. With your application you must enclose a copy of a valid identity document, a curriculum vitae in English and a video link to one of your recordings, as well as payment of the registration fee (see point 13). Only applications that are accompanied by all the required documentation will be considered valid.

7. All interested musicians – including those who have already participated in previous editions of the Gustav Mahler Academy – are required to submit a short video (approx. duration 5 minutes – the duration may obviously vary depending on the repertoire performed) in a format compatible with electronic submission and exclusively via a YouTube or Vimeo link (or similar). The link must permit the video to be viewed directly in the browser, with no need to download the video file. Videos that have to be downloaded will not be considered. Recordings made using a smartphone and without piano accompaniment will be regarded as sufficient.

8. The repertoire for the video recording is the Exposition of one the following concertos:
Violin – any Mozart concerto;
Viola – Hoffmeister concerto in D major; or Stamitz concerto in D major; or Mozart concerto K 622;
Cello – Haydn D-major concerto;
Double bass – Dittersdorf concerto no. 2; or Vanhal concerto in D major;
Flute – any Mozart concerto;
Oboe – Mozart concerto K 314;
Clarinet – Mozart concerto K 622;
Bassoon – Mozart concerto K 191;
Horn – any Mozart concerto;
Trumpet – Haydn concerto in E flat major;
Trombone – Prelude of any Bach Suite (entire movement);
Timpani – Mozart Magic Flute Overture (audition excerpt); Krüger: Etude no. 45.

9. Deadline for submission of applications: April 11, 2023.

10. Course participants will be chosen by the artistic curator and an artistic commission, whose decisions will be final. The results of the selection process will be communicated to the musicians by e-mail by May 12, 2023. No feedback will be sent, nor will there be any correspondence regarding the decisions made.

11. All of the selected musicians will receive, by e-mail, a formal letter of invitation to participate by May 12, 2023. As from that date they will each have until May 22, 2023 to confirm their participation by sending an e-mail to caramaschi@busoni-mahler.eu and making payment of the participation fee (see point 13.)

12. If no confirmation is received, the secretariat of the Busoni-Mahler Foundation will revoke the candidate’s invitation and pass it on to the next applicant on the reserve list, according to the rankings drawn up by the artistic curator during the selection process.

13. Registration and participation fees. Two fee types are envisaged for the two-year course:
A. a registration fee of €30.00 for each candidate, to be paid at the time of application in accordance with the instructions on the application form;
B. a one-off participation fee for the 2023/2024 Biennial of €70.00, to be paid upon admission to the Gustav Mahler Academy.

14. Participants will be accommodated for the duration of the courses in a double room at a hotel at the Busoni-Mahler Foundation’s expense. Participants may use a canteen service for meals at the Foundation’s expense or, if previously agreed, meal vouchers that can be used at authorised establishments.

15. All participants are entitled to an annual scholarship of €300.00 for 2023 and €500.00 for 2024, which will be paid by bank transfer at the end of each period.

16. A good knowledge of English is required for all participants attending the courses.

17. Class attendance is compulsory. The full programme will be issued within 30 days of the start of classes.

18. Double bass players should preferably bring their own instrument with them to the courses. If they want an instrument to be provided by the Busoni-Mahler Foundation, they must make a specific request following confirmation of their admission to the courses.
