Vienna 1890-1920 on original instruments:

The Gustav Mahler Academy offers young musicians the unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in the historical performance practice of music from the turn of the century in Vienna, from Brahms to Mahler and Schönberg. Strings play on gut strings, while winds, percussion and harps use the historical instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1900, which have been specially provided by the Euregio Cultural Centre Dobbiaco Foundation.

Collaborating with Stefan Arzberger, Clive Brown, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Volker Jacobsen, Robert Oberaigner, David Watkin and Philipp von Steinaecker, they will rediscover chamber music from Brahms to Schönberg on original instruments.

In an alternative concert format, ensembles from the Mahler Academy will perform single movements from works by Schönberg, Pfitzner, Enescu, Webern, Wolff and Brahms on period instruments. In the second half of the programme, Sir John Eliot Gardiner will conduct Schubert’s string quartet ‘Death and the Maiden’ in the version for string orchestra by Gustav Mahler. Concerts will take place on September 2 in Bolzano and September 3 in Dobbiaco/Toblach.

In Dobbiaco, where Mahler composed his last symphonies, the young instrumentalists will then work side by side with 50 musicians from top European ensembles. Philipp von Steinaecker will conduct Mahler’s 5th Symphony on period instruments and Leif Ove Andsnes will be the soloist in Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto on a Steinway from 1910.

During the following tour they will present these works to the international music world for the first time since 1910 on the instruments for which they were written.
