Acclaimed for his “incredible affinity for timbres” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) and for his “intimate and refined sound expressing maturity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), Michail Lifits has gained international public and critical attention in recent years. Born in 1982 in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), he moved to Germany at the age of sixteen and studied with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Bernd Goetzke at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. He then studied with Boris Petrushansky at the Accademia “Incontri col Maestro” in Imola. Following his victory at the Busoni Competition in 2009, he has performed on the stages of prestigious concert halls (Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Philharmonie in Berlin, Sala Verdi in Milan, Tonhalle Zürich, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam) and at important international festivals (Verbier Festival, BBC Proms, Ruhr Piano Festival, Bergen International Festival, Gstaad Menuhin Festival). His chamber activity is also intense, alongside musicians of the calibre of Vilde Frang, Nicolas Altstaedt, Steven Isserlis, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Veronika Eberle, Alexandra Conunova and Nils Mönkemeyer. Since 2011 Michail Lifits has had an exclusive contract with Decca for which he has produced records dedicated to Mozart (2012), Schubert’s sonatas (2015) and Shostakovich (2017).
